Aaron Beck theorized that humans begin formulating and establishing rules to govern their lives early on. Beck originally studied depression and believed that its roots lie in the way people think about themselves and the world around them, and that depressed individuals are characterized by irrational ways of thinking.
Beck discussed how people exaggerate their problems and failures while minimizing their achievements and successes, drawing conclusions based on a single, trivial event. For example: If someone you know and consider friendly walks past you on the street without greeting you, do you conclude that they probably didn't see you or that they don't like you? Beck's theory suggests that an individual who concludes they are disliked based on this situation is more likely to develop depression than someone who decides that the person probably didn't see them.
